The Hubs and I haven't traveled together out of CO or NE since we went to Hawaii in 2013! We also haven't been to Vegas as a married couple. :) We went a year before our wedding for a Bachelor/Bachelorette Party.

We didn't have a lot of plans, except WIN BIG! I wish I could say that we did win big, but upon return Ryan had to go to work.

I play the MyVegas Rewards Game on my iPad a lot, so we were able to enjoy some comps through that. We ate at buffets, 2 for 1, and went to the Beatles Love cirque du soleil show. All in all it was a great time!

Oh, and while we were there, I made Elite in my doTERRA business! That was a BIG WIN as it was my June goal! To make it three months early was pretty awesome!
Since today is March 1st and we are going to Vegas in 20 days I thought I'd borrow her plan and try and post some goals each week for getting back in the gym and on track!

Goal 1: 10,000 Steps A Day!
I have a Garmin Vivofit that tracks my steps, but as you can see from the picture below, I've been slacking lately.

Next week's picture will show all green bars (meaning I reached the goal that Garmin set for me) and all at 10,000 steps!

Goal 2: Go to the gym 3 days!
I have a gym partner, we work out on Monday's and Wednesday's. I need to go one additional day this week!

Goal 3: Get back on track with food!
I've been a slacker about planning meals and often end up flying by the seat of my pants. As I type this I'm in Nebraska with my mom and have nothing planned for the week at home except the text I sent the hubs asking him to take the pork chops out of the freezer. I need to get back at pre-planning my day and packing my lunch at night--well as much as I can.

Well there you go! Three goals for the week, and some accountability because now all of you on the Internets know it too!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09806986797423036657noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26448314.post-9544073094875034332015-02-22T19:24:00.002-07:002015-02-22T19:42:16.112-07:00Love Ya Daddy-o!On January 27th my life changed pretty dramatically. After I got home from a basketball game and a team dinner my husband told me that my mom had called and my dad had died. I didn't believe him! I had talked to my mom on Monday and she said dad had gone to the doctor, had a UTI and was on antibiotics. She and dad had been at the farm house discussing their new kitchen. It couldn't be real. But it was, my dad was with Jesus and I was 8 hours away!

We packed up and headed to NE the next morning and Ryan didn't even have me drive. We got home and met with the Pastor & funeral guy that evening. It still didn't seem real. It just felt like dad was at work and would be returning home.

Thursday we picked out his casket, planned for his funeral, and again, it didn't seem real.

Friday night at the viewing it became real--walking into the funeral home and seeing him, as we often saw him, "sleeping" in his casket is something I wasn't prepared for. The rush of sadness was crazy overwhelming and I stood there wrapped in the arms of my husband, brother, and mom wishing I was anywhere else.

We had requested that memorials be sent to the fire station in lieu of flowers. We were shocked at how many flowers there were despite this request!

We had dad's coat on display and used his helmet on his casket spread instead of flowers. Dad wasn't a flowery guy, but the greenery with his helmet were perfect. Dad loved to be outside working at the farm and loved serving as a fireman.

On Saturday we headed to the church for the funeral at 9:30 AM. I thought I'd be okay, the worst had to be yesterday, right? Nope. I was setting up a slide show on the projector, turned around and saw my grandma and lost it.

The funeral was done very well and the Pastor did a great job of pointing to Jesus during his sermon. Since my dad was active in the local volunteer fire department the firemen, from THREE departments, were present and standing at attention while dad was carried out of the church.

SIX fire trucks lead the processional from the church to the cemetery. It was pretty neat.

At the cemetery the firemen again stood at attention while the pallbearers--firemen in their coats--took dad to his final resting place.

I took this picture after the graveside service had ended. Maybe it's weird to some, but I knew that if I didn't take pictures I would never have the opportunity to take them again, so I did. I could hear my dad grumbling as I took it--he wasn't big on getting his picture taken, but he entertained me often and let me take selfies with him, or would pose with me if I asked. Often with a grumbled look on his face. :)

My dad was pretty great! I have many memories of him that will last a lifetime. I'm so glad he got to walk me down the aisle. My husband is a lot like my dad--they are both measure twice, cut once kind of guys. My mom, brother and I tend to be measure, cut, and make it work kind of people. :)

I remember him taking me to Wal-Mart one weekend because I really wanted to go shopping and my mom was working. I whined all weekend I think, and finally on Sunday, later than he probably should have, he took me to Wal-Mart. I don't even know if we bought anything, but he took me.

He built me the most amazing lofts when I was in college for me and my roommate. We had enough room to stand under them and the ladders were removable so that we had a whole living area in our room. We only used them one year, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were still around at CUNE!

And this Christmas, for probably the first time ever, he smiled at his Christmas gift and smiled when he opened it. Most of the time he would tell us that we didn't need to get him anything.

My dad would give you the shirt off your back if you asked. I remember one time he picked up a hitchhiker when we were on our way home from town. My mom chewed his butt because we were with him, but he said he knew the guy. I still am not sure if he really knew the guy or just knew of him or what. But the fact was, the guy needed a ride, so dad gave him one.

We saw just how many lives my dad touched at the viewing and the funeral. I'm pretty sure there were 180 plus present at both.

I love you daddy-o, and hope you are enjoying all the midnight snacks you want in heaven! ;) I miss you!

This is the song I found to play in the background of the slid show. I've heard it one other time since dad's funeral and lost it all over again. How great it is to know that because of Jesus we will be together again with no pain or sorrow!

I think that's a lyric from what is probably a bad country song. But it's the truth.

Here's another truth...I like blogging and want to be a regular blogger, but feel like I have nothing to blog about so then I don't, but then I think a million things to blog about and am over whelmed, so I don't. See the problem?!

Well, good news. I'm going to make this work! Or try really hard at it. Why? Because I want to, and I enjoy it, so here are some things that are going to be appearing on the blog soon...

and much, much more! So stay tuned!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09806986797423036657noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26448314.post-32647708342330693082014-09-21T16:25:00.000-06:002014-09-21T16:26:31.605-06:00Essential Oils--Use them!So last year I started reading about Essential Oils on the Anderson Crew blog. I was intrigued by all the things she said, but also wanted to know myself. I wanted to talk face to face with someone. So until then I kept reading about how wonderful they are.

Then this summer I overheard in the office that one of my teachers was having an Essential Oil Class and I wasn't invited. I cornered her in her classroom and asked her if I could come. She seemed shocked. She told me she didn't really know if it would be worth it but a friend of hers sells them and she was just trying to be nice...etc. I told her to stop trying to talk me out of it and tell me when it was.

So I went to the class and I was hooked! She sells DoTerra Esstial Oils. I signed up right there to be a Wellness Advocate and ordered my Family Physician and Slim & Sassy kit. I couldn't wait for it to arrive!

While I waited, I pinned a few things.
Follow Sarah's board Essential Oils on Pinterest.

When they finally got here the first thing I did was made Ryan an allergy bomb and put it on his toes that night! When allergies are in full swing he's poppin' Claritin, Zantac, or whatever allergy meds he can get over the counter. Unfortunately each season they seem to be less effective. So I started rubbing the allergy bomb on his toes. And it worked! Every night I mixed my lemon, peppermint, and lavender in my hands, he would smell it and then get a foot massage, primarily on his toes.

You can see that our sinuses, nose, and throat have reflexology points on our toes, which is why I rubbed it there.

I also made some anti-itch spray that I tried on Ryan. He wasn't convinced it would work, but after a few minutes I asked him if his bites still itched and he replied, "Oh, I guess not" with a smirk on his face telling me that his doubt in the great essential oils was fading.

Since I got my first order in June, I've ordered a few more times. :) I'm sold! They are FABULOUS!

You can check them out on my website, www.mydoterra.com/sarahglover

I graduated college in May 2004. I don't remember when I joined Facebook or how it came about, but I remember that Hannie made me do it. :)

Then, in 2011, Hannie came to CO to run the Bolder Boulder with me. She introduced me to this new thing...Pinterest. She showed me hers and told me it was by invite only, but she'd invite me. At first, I played on it here and there...then it started to take over! Here's a little screenshot of my pinterest page, and some of my boards were cut off, after I reduced the size of the page!

That's a lot of boards. I have baby boards, both for a boy and a girl and a general baby board. I have crafting boards--Christmas, Fall, and general. I have school boards--Teaching math, grammar, writing, civil war, art, Back to School, and School. Then I have cooking boards, recipes to try, sweet recipes, crock pot recipes. I have dream boards--next vacation, next house, beautiful backyards, gifts I'd be okay getting. And I have a board for my DOG and husband. I like Pinterest. Maybe too much.

This year as I prepped for going back to school I dreamed of making the perfect planner. One that allowed me to plan my lessons for school along with my meal plans and so much more. But then I panicked that I couldn't do it and when I stumbled into Office Depot one July day and saw a beautiful lesson planner starring at me with rainbow colors and awesomeness, I decided that it would do. You see, I use my phone/Google calendar for EVERYTHING. If it's not in my Google calendar, I'll probably forget that I have to do it. But it's still not enough. I like writing things down. I like crossing things off lists.

With the great meal prep of Sunday I wanted that dreamy planner that I envisioned in my head for school/home/LIFE. So I searched on Pinterest. I haven't found it yet, but I've found plenty that are inspiring.

So, my plan? Create the dream planner that I've always wanted. :)

Well, kind of...

School is back in session, so it is a happy new year! Just a different kind of happy new year. Now that school is back in session, my days are filling up fast! So fast that this week, after today, I probably won't see the inside of my house before 8 PM most days. Sad Face.

Yesterday was Meal Prep Sunday! A co-worker came over and we prepped SIX crock pot meals for the month of September. I ended up with ten meals because three of the recipes I divided into two bags each. When I sat down to meal plan for September I felt like I had TOO MANY options! That never happens! It is quite glorious!

It took us about three hours to prep the meals. We had each chosen three recipes to share with eacher other. We each did our own shopping, though we did share a few ingredients. After I sent a text that said, If you buy apple juice, I'll get all the spices. :)

Here's what we made-- Chicken Broccoli Alfredo, BBQ Chicken with Veggies, Taco Chicken, Stuffed Peppers, Pineapple Pork, and Sweet & Sour Chicken. Obviously there is a chicken theme. All meals were put in gallon sized freezer bags and stuck in the freezer. I'm pretty excited to reap the benefits of this endeavor.

I wish I had thought to take a picture of our table full of ingredients and while we were preparing the meals. Next time.

**I thought I had all the recipes on my Pinterest Board but now I can only find the link to the one. Sorry.

And, because blogs need pictures...here's one totally unrelated to this post. My two favorites with whom I share my house.

One thing I recently found is a recipe for Turkey Chili. It's fabulous! It's got some kick to it and it takes about 15 minutes to throw it together.

Today Ryan when back to work after being off for the holidays. Since we got back from NE on Monday night, had a NYE gathering on Tuesday night and when to Ryan's parents yesterday, I haven't had time to really get some food made for his lunches. Well, after making waffles this morning, Ryan came down and asked what we had for lunch. I told him just go to the Prairie Dog today and that I would have stuff for him for lunch tomorrow. As I was looking at the recipe for meatloaf (his favorite), I realized that I could throw this chili together while he ate breakfast and he would have some lunch. So I did. Kind of. I didn't have the beans, but I had everything else for him. I cooked the turkey, mixed everything together and put it in a bowl for him for lunch.

I'm working really hard on saving this year. One way I know we can save more is to eat out less. I set that as a goal for myself and then on January 2nd I was telling my husband to go eat out for lunch. Face plant! This recipe is definitely one of my go to recipes and I will be stocking up on the ingredients for it so we can make it regularly.

I made this recipe card to share with you, my dear blogger friends. The actual recipe is pinned on my Yummy board on Pinterest, and came from AllRecipes.com . If you follow the link, it will take you to the original. The only thing that I've changed from the original is that I do not use the olive oil.
But, I sure thought about them a lot. :) Even though I didn't accomplish many of my goals, some great things happened in 2013. I meant to blog about those great things yesterday, but I forgot. So here they are, in no particular order.

My brother and his wife became parents and I now I have a beautiful niece. Little Miss is my favorite thing about going to Nebraska! She has beautiful sparkling blue eyes and a wonderful disposition. I am grateful that every time I come home, her momma lets me watch Little Miss at least once while I'm home.

We went to Hawaii! I made a goal a loooooooooooooong time ago to visit 50 states before I turned 40. I honestly didn't think I would ever make it to Hawaii or Alaska. However, we made it to Hawaii and it was beautiful. We went to Kaui with great friends and got to be with them when they found out they were going to be parents. Little M was officially made theirs through adoption on December 28th!

On our way to Hawaii we were able to spend a day in Seattle. Checking Washington off of our list of places to visit. It was a long day, arriving in Seattle around 9 AM and then departing the next morning for Hawaii.

I got a tattoo. I've been talking about it for years. I never thought I would actually do it. I was with the right people at the right time, and the weekend of Thanksgiving I got my tattoo. I love it! I thought I would only get one tattoo, but soon after it healed, I started thinking about my second tattoo. We'll see if I ever get it.

I attended my sixth National Youth Gathering and checked Texas off of my list of states to visit. I met some more great people and we had a great time in San Antonio.

I'm sure there were many other great things of 2013, but they slip my mind right now. Here's to many great things in 2014!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09806986797423036657noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26448314.post-10414880897851586472013-12-22T19:20:00.000-07:002013-12-22T19:20:34.577-07:00Denver Girls Night OutAbout a month ago, some friends from work and I went out for a fun night in Denver. We had purchased a Groupon for Manis and Martinis in September and decided that it was time to use it.

We met first for dinner before heading to the Beauty Bar. I don't remember where we ate, but burgers were consumed. :)

The Beauty Bar opens at 7 PM and only does manis until 10 PM. We headed there right at 7 to be sure that we could get our manis. Now, if you are looking for all the bells and whistles of a manicure, then the Beauty Bar is not for you. If you are looking for a quick polish change with a little shaping while you drink your Martini, then head on over.

The four of us got our nails painted and enjoyed a couple of drinks. The Beauty Bar reminded me of a scene from the movie Grease. It was decorated with glittery walls and 50s sort of decor. If my nails hadn't been wet, I would have taken a couple of pictures.

After our manis were dry we headed for dessert at the D Bar.

The D Bar is owned by Keegan Gerhard and Lisa Bailey. Keegan Gerhard has been featured on the Food Network many times. It's a tiny little restaurant and every time I have been there, there has been a wait to get in.

The two times I had been there before, I thought that we had just stood in line waiting, so that's what we did this night. However, after about 15 minutes and telling people they had to stand and wait and that there was no list, I learned that there was indeed a list. Oops. I don't know if that's a new thing, or if I just never knew we had put our name on a list when I had been at the D Bar before. Oh, well, now I know.

As we were waiting to get in, my neighbor came out with a group of her friends. The D Bar is a great way to spend a girls night. :)

So let me tell you about eMeals, so that you too can heart them!

<img alt="I <3 eMeals" border="0" height="90" src="http://emeals.com/banners/banner-90x90.jpg" width="90" />

I had heard about emeals about a year ago when a friend/co-worker sent me a Groupon about it. I looked at it and thought, no, don't be stupid! You can look up recipes online and you have a few cookbooks. So I passed it up.

Then, in May or June Colleen was telling me how a friend of theirs was using emeals and how it was a great tool for them. They own a business and have two small children, so emeals was making their meal planning and prepping a breeze. Colleen mentioned that she was going to try it. Then I saw the Groupon was available again. So I sent her the Groupon link and she bought it.

I still wasn't sold.

After Ryan and Colleen had been using it for about a month I asked how she liked it. I was at her house and she showed me the plan. Holy easy batman! Every week they would email her a plan of 7 meals AND A GROCERY LIST. Along the right of the grocery list was the list of staples she would need. It was pretty awesome. Then she let me copy a recipe or two...I was sold!

But I had to do two things, first wait for another Groupon and second, convince my Ryan. The second was the harder.

I Googled "eMeals Groupon" frequently while trying to convince Ryan. I was hoping to get the same deal Colleen had got. One year of dinners for $29! A steal really! Then a miracle happened! Groupon was giving your an instant $10 off if you spent over $30 on a Groupon AND eMeals had a Groupon that was $39 and included dinners AND lunches for the year! I was double sold. Lunches and dinners for a year for $29!?! How could I not? I did it!

We've been using it about two weeks now and I love it When the menu comes to my inbox I print it off. I go through it and see if there is anything that I know we won't eat. If so, I cross it off and cross off any of the grocery items related only to that meal. Then I check my staples to make sure I have them all. I also check my meat supply. I buy a lot of chicken and pork chops when it's on sale, so I did have a pretty decent supply in my freezer.

We (I) chose the clean eating plan. This past week for 14 meals I paid $100 in groceries. Since returning from NE we have eaten out once, on Saturday, at the Movie Tavern. If we ate out more than three times a week for dinner, we'd easily spend $100! So getting 14 meals for both of us for $100 a week is pretty awesome!

Tonight as we were eating Chipotle Chicken Potatoes, I asked Ryan if he was willing to admit that eMeals was an okay investment. His response, "I still don't know what it does that a cookbook can't do." So I told him he could pick, plan, and shop for the meals next week out of a cookbook. The ease of having it all emailed and ready to go is worth it in my book. Especially once school starts back up and I'm driving 45 minutes each way every day! To come home and not have to think about what to make will be awesome!

New menus come on Wednesdays, so I would like to be able to go to the store on Friday nights. Doing that allows the weekend to prep anything that needs prepped. This week I prepped a few meals and had them in the fridge with sticky notes on them. Ryan was able to finish up the process when he got home and dinner was ready! That's fabulous!

<img alt="I <3 eMeals" border="0" height="90" src="http://emeals.com/banners/banner-90x90.jpg" width="90" />

**eMeals did not pay me to promote them, all of my opinions are my own based on my own experiences. If you click one of the eMeals pictures in this post you will be taken to my eMeals referral page and I can receive a 25% referral commission.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09806986797423036657noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26448314.post-77107550132877316242013-07-31T09:28:00.002-06:002013-07-31T09:28:32.725-06:00San AntonioAt the end of June we headed to San Antonio for the LCMS National Youth Gathering! This was the sixth gathering that I have attended and Ryan's second. I volunteered as a CLB.

Being in SA was nice and different. Most of my gathering experiences have been in Orlando or New Orleans. My first one was in Atlanta. I was glad to go somewhere different AND somewhere I had never been!

We arrived two days before the kids did. I had two days of training before the gathering started. I served in an Information Booth which was a lot of fun. It was probably one of the best jobs I've had at the gathering.

We frequented the River Walk for meals and saw the Alamo.

We were so busy we really didn't get any good pictures taken. We took a few here and there on the phones, but nothing fabulous.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09806986797423036657noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26448314.post-43751668720077470382013-06-25T19:03:00.003-06:002013-06-25T19:03:56.055-06:00Happiness Happens HereToday I invite you to click on over to Colleen's blog. On the first day we were in Hawaii she and Ryan got some pretty great news. Check it out. But then come back...

Welcome back! Okay, I think we're at Thursday. We woke up around 6 AM, damn roosters, once again.

Today we were going to head to another beach in the morning and then on to an ATV tour of an old Sugar Plantation. This was recommended to us by Nicole and Tony who have traveled to Kauai quite a bit. We headed out excited. Colleen had told us if we wanted to drive we had to bring our driver's licence. Ryan and I were both excited to drive!

Once we got there Ryan and I stayed at the car slathering him with sunscreen. When we got over the ATVs only Ryan and Ryan were driving. I was pretty bummed by this, because being a passenger seemed like a boring thing. We talked to the kind people at Kipu Ranch and they worked it out so that Ryan and I could have our own ATV and Ryan and Colleen had their own. Happy dance!

We were given helmets and handkerchiefs. I also took goggles. The trails were pretty dry and full of the famous Hawaiian Red Dirt. We had AWESOME guides, and I wish I could remember their names. They showed us how to safely drive the ATVs and stopped to tell us some Hawaiian history throughout the tour. Halfway through our tour we stopped and they had snacks, macadamia nuts, cookies, and water or juice.

Stole this picture from Colleen so you could see how dirty one got as they drove/ride

Along the way we learned about different movies and TV shows that had been shot on the ranch. We got to see the famous rope swing from Indiana Jones and were given the opportunity to swing on the rope and drop into the river if we want.

Now, this next part is a bit embarrassing, so I want you to remember one thing as you read/laugh.

I was the first one to volunteer to swing on the rope.

There was also a boy, who had Aspergers, or something, who also wanted to go, so I let him go first. It was my turn. I was taken back to my rope swing days at Camp Luther and super excited to drop in the river. (I had wore my swimsuit in preparation for getting wet this time.) Well, let's just say that my upper arm strength is lacking. I fell in the river alright, just not out away from the bank like I was supposed to. I dropped in the water almost immediately. I think everyone on the bank was a bit shocked because they didn't know I planned on dropping into the water. It was pretty great.

Ryan Oakes also went in and dropped into the water. I decided to go a second time, and thought I'd climb up a rock putting me up higher so I could grab the rope better and swing out farther. Fail. I scrapped my foot on the bank and dropped WAY earlier than I planned and came up coughing and sputtering. Ryan, Ryan, and Colleen looked in shock, saw I was okay and then busted out laughing. Punks! But remember...

I volunteered to go first!

And my Ryan and Colleen didn't even try it. So embarrassing or not, it was also fun. And Ryan and I got to sport these amazing water shoes for the whole adventure. I'll let you guess who's leg belongs to who... (hint: One of us tans, and the other one stays a pretty alabaster.) ;)

The ATV adventure was Ryan's highlight of the trip. Really, when it was compared to cookie tossing took the gold immediately. I had fun when I drove and the scenery was pretty awesome too!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A couple of things I forgot in earlier posts...
First, when we were on the sunset cruise, we saw dolphins in the water next to our boat I was lucky enough to get this picture of one diving back into the water. It was tough to capture them because you weren't ever sure where they would come up. Once I got this picture, I stopped worrying about getting the picture and just enjoyed watching them.
Second, at the Smith Family Luau it was mating season. We saw LOTS of boy peacocks strutting their stuff for the ladies.
We had to be at Captain Andy's at 3 PM, which mean leaving our condo around 1:30 PM.
We bummed around at the condo all morning and truly enjoyed relaxing. After getting ready we packed up and headed down south.
Our cruise would be taking us along the Na Pali Coast. Taking a cruise was the best option to see the Na Pali Coast for us. Other options included hiking in and taking a helicopter ride. So a nice sunset cruise seemed like a good plan.
When we got on the cruise I was a bit perturbed because they kept saying "You will get wet on this trip." I did not sign up to get wet. I was wearing a cute maxi dress I had bought specifically for the cruise. I had bought Ryan and polo that complimented my dress nicely and I had high hopes of beautiful pictures of us as the sun was setting. Getting wet was not an option!
Well as it turns out, taking beautiful pictures of Ryan and I wasn't an option either...here's the only picture of Ryan I got.
And I have none of me on the cruise. I think Colleen has a few, but she hasn't sent them to me yet. Why you ask? Well, let me tell you...
We set out along the coast for about two hours. The wind was blowing in our hair and getting wet was minimum. At the end of our two hours, the waters got extremely choppy. I was a bit worried about Ryan before getting on the boat because it seems that if there is one bee in a room of 10,000 people it will sting him. He seemed to be doing okay, but as the water got more choppy he got more green. The water finally calmed down a bit and the boat began to turn and they put the sails up.
The plan was to sail for a bit while dinner was served and then head back to where we started. Well, during the turning we all took turns going to the restroom, down below, where it was REALLY rocky. I felt like a drunk trying to use the restroom and I had only had one drink...TWO HOURS AGO. I came up and Ryan wasn't down there waiting for me. He was at the rail of the back of the boat. He had gotten really nauseous and needed some more air.
Colleen and Ryan were also feeling icky. They all were a little green. Dinner came around and my Ryan declined it because he wasn't sure he could keep it do What I ate was pretty good.
It rained a bit while we were out and about, and we saw a beautiful rainbow. At one point we were "under" the rainbow. It was pretty cool.
After the rain we were joined by a doctor and a nurse. Whilst carrying on a conversation with them Ryan O. kindly asked me to get him a puke-bag. A few moments later my Ryan, more urgently and not as kindly requested a puke-bag too.
So as the sunset my poor husband was tossing his cookies and missing it. I tried to take photos and take care of him at the same time. Ryan O. recovered quicker so I passed the camera to Colleen so she could take more pictures of the sunset.
It was truly beautiful and I felt the cruise was well worth it. The others didn't quite have the same joy I had.
We returned to the dock and Ryan was quite happy to see solid land. I assured him that should we ever take the cruise I really want to go on with him someday it wouldn't be the same...bigger boat...we'd plan accordingly...please don't hate the water...etc.
I had asked the crew, who by the way was amazing at caring for the seasick people, four people on our side of the boat had less than awesome sunsets, if we could get Ryan's food to take with us. Since we had paid for dinner, I wanted him to be able to enjoy it, and he's good about eating leftovers. I had also asked them to please put what was left of my meal in with his. Well somehow we ended up with two complete steak and shrimp dinners. Ryan enjoyed a steak dinner the next two nights.
So that is why there are no pictures of me from this event in this blog. And that is why our Christmas card photo for this year will not be me in a cute, bright pink maxi dress and Ryan in a fabulous lime green polo on a boat as the sun sets...
The first full day on the island Luau was on our schedule. I don't remember what time we had to be there, but it was later so we decided to head to the beach first.
Ryan Oakes, Guidebook King, had read about Hideaway Beach and it was walking distance from us. Like just across the street, and down some crazy ropes...
It was a steep hike, but well worth it. It was a beautiful beach, perfect for snorkeling. We only had 3 snorkeling sets, so Ryan and Colleen went out and about all day and the hubs and I shared the third set. They were way more into it than we were. After a few hours at the beach we headed back to the condo. The hike up wasn't as terrible as I was anticipating it to be.
We headed to the Smith Family Garden Luau The gardens were quite awesome. However, I don't have as many pictures as I would have liked because I'm a big dork! I took my battery out of my nice camera to charge it up and left it on the charger at the condo. I had my small camera with me, but I had forgot the charger for that camera in Colorado, AND because I used my phone to navigate it was nearly dead. So trying to conserve the battery on the phone and small camera, here are some of the pictures I did get.
Entrance
Upon arriving we were escorted to a train which took us all around the gardens and the lady on the train told us about each area. It was pretty neat. We also learned that it was mating season in the gardens...
The Luau included pulling the pig out of the pit, eating yummy food (though I could do without poi...I'll stick with mashed potatoes thankyouverymuch!). I tried to take some pictures of them pulling the pig out, but my little camera can't keep up with movement like my big camera can. :(
My small camera can also not handle taking pictures of dancing Hawaiians in the dark...so I have no pictures of the dancing. Boo!
We enjoyed the Luau, but I think we all agreed that the dancing/hula part was about 30 minutes too long. An hour is a long time to sit after eating and near the end of the night. And, as Mr. Smith told us (and Ryan G. reminded us frequently) Hawaiians don't eat get full, they eat to sleep, we were tired.
Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09806986797423036657noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26448314.post-6584288375058930122013-06-19T23:12:00.001-06:002013-06-19T23:12:22.046-06:00Kauai, Day 1Up and at them early in the morning! We made it to our flight with no problems and headed to San Diego. The Seattle to San Diego flight wasn't bad at all. Switched planes and then headed on one of the longest flights ever! Just when you think you can't sit anymore...you have to sit more.
We landed in Kauai, the airport is about the size of the Omaha airport, so it didn't take long to get our bag and head to the rental car place. We had rented the car with our flights. Ryan and Colleen weren't landing for about two hours, so we grabbed our car and headed to K-Mart.
Ryan had worn his Adidas sandals, well it turns out the little nubs on the bottom of them aren't really massaging and he was walking like an old man. And he was puffy from the long flight. :P Our task at K-Mart was to find him cheap flip flops that were comfy for the rest of our trip. He picked out a bright green pair which were not going to match when we were dressing up, so I made him buy an all black pair too that weren't quite as comfy as the green ones but more comfy than the Adidas ones.
We also went to a grocery store to buy some stuff for breakfast...18 eggs, 20 waffles, 10 yogurts, syrup. We also grabbed some chips and salsa and Dr. Pepper. Then back to the airport (5 minutes away) to get Ryan and Colleen.
After picking them up, we headed to Costco so they could get a few things, and then on to Princeville to find our condo.
We stayed at a VRBO in Princeville, located near the St. Regis Resort in Princeville. The condo was pretty awesome. Two bedrooms downstairs. Ryan and Colleen had the master room with their own bathroom, and Ryan and I had the guest room. We used the main bathroom. Both rooms had doors that went outside to a deck. Upstairs there was a kitchen, half bath, living room, and another deck.
The view from the decks were pretty great. We could see a Golf Course, Hanalei Bay, and the Mountains! A short walk across the street had us looking at a beautiful view of the ocean.
Because of flying all day, we didn't do much on our first day. We headed into Hanalei Bay to find some dinner. We ended up at Bubba's Burger where Colleen ordered a chili dog... My Ryan had a teriyaki burger, which was different. I'm still not sure how I feel about it but he loved it
My goal is to visit all 50 states before I turn 40. I counted tonight...I have 19 states left. I'm 31. Can I do it? I sure hope so. That will be another blog...
On to this blog...how I got two states in one trip. Around Christmas Colleen asked me if we wanted to go to Hawaii with her and Ryan, she had found a great deal on condo in Kauai and it all seemed like a good deal. So naturally, I said yes. (Well after I talked to my Ryan).
I booked our flights for a reasonable price in March. We were going to fly Denver to Seattle to San Diego to Kauai. The problem I realized was that we landed in Seattle at 8 PM and didn't fly out again until 6 AM. So I called the airline about changing the flights. I could...for $350!!! Yeah right! The wonderful lady at Alaskan Airlines however did tell me that they have something called Same Day Confirmed and that I could call 6 hours before any flight and if there are open seats I can change my flight to those seats for $25 per person. Now that is a price I can handle. She gave me the times of all the flights for the day we were leaving.
At midnight I woke up and tried to check to see if we could change our flights. It wasn't working or something. So at 3 AM I woke up and tried again. I could get us on the 9:30 AM flight! Woot! We had already booked a hotel for the night on Priceline for about $80. I woke Ryan up at 6 AM so we could pack and head out. We decided just to park our car at the airport because it's easier to have our own car than asking people to come and get us. And we had a coupon for $5 a day, another sweet deal. We parked and got on our plane with time to spare.
While flying we saw some pretty amazing views of the mountains in Washington. The guy who was sitting next to us was nice enough to snap a few pictures with my camera for me.
Once we landed in Seattle we headed to the hotel shuttles. We had chosen an airport hotel with a 24 hour shuttle so we could get to the airport without any problem. We were hoping for decent public transportation to get us around Seattle, but honestly, I hadn't really looked anything up before leaving. :S
The hotel it turns out was walking distance. We waited longer for the shuttle than it actually took to get to the hotel. We were checking in WAY early, so we figured our room wouldn't be ready, but it was. We put our stuff in our room, put on our tennis shoes (& it was cool enough that Ryan actually put pants on!) and headed to the front desk to see if there was easy public transportation. There was! Just had to walk...back to the airport.
We headed to the downtown area to go to the Pike Place Market. One of the two things I knew we had to check out in Seattle. We stopped first at Q'doba for lunch.
I thought the market was pretty neat. It smelled of fish! Blech! But it also smelled of flowers too. So it balanced out...kind of.
The crabs in the containers were alive an walking around. The King Salmon, not so alive. Fish is so gross. Dead with eyes open. Served in a manner that it still looks like it's alive. I can't handle it. I will eat salmon once in a while. I can't cook it though. I buy it and make Ryan cook it, then I only eat half of my piece. I'm trying...it's not working.
Anyway, back to Seattle. We walked around the market and took in the sights of it. I enjoyed it. Ryan later told me he could have done without the market.
After we decided we were done at the market, we wanted to head to the Space Needle. We looked at our map and learned it was about a mile from where we were. We walked it. It was a pretty nice, shady walk.
And the Space Needle peaked out at us from behind some trees. Ryan had already told me we weren't paying to go up in the needle, so I didn't ask. Though I'm not sure that I needed to. We went up in the Empire State Building in NYC, but that was Ryan's idea, and it was amazing, but I LOVE NYC. I liked Seattle, but it isn't even close to NYC in my heart. :)
So instead we walked around it. There was a neat glass museum next to the Needle too, but we didn't want to pay to go in. We had to get on a Metro Rail for about 2 minutes to get to the Light Rail station. The Light Rail then took us to the airport and we headed back to the hotel. We had a 6 AM flight out to San Diego, so we needed to head to the airport by 4:30 AM. Thankfully it wasn't far. We stopped for dinner at the hotel restaurant. We weren't really hungry, but wanted a little substance, so we split a sandwich.
Next up...Day 1 in Kauai.
I was sure that this year, beginning in January, I would be on TOP of blogging. I thought about it a lot. Mainly in the shower, no where near a computer.
But life happens and so here it is May, and I'm back. Here's a quick recap of the past few months...
February--I went to Arizona for the LEA principal's conference. It was a quick flight, but a good time. I look forward to going next year.
March--The most beautiful niece on the face of the earth was born to my bro and his wife. I had to wait almost THREE weeks to see her! I spent Spring Break in Nebraska so I could see her for a good solid five days. Spring break overlapped into Easter, so Ryan joined me for Easter and we drove back to CO together.
April--I celebrated my 31st birthday! I wanted to do something spectacular for my 30th, but that came and went, so then I thought for my 31st I would. Well it came and went. But with it also came plans to go to Hawaii. We are going with our friends, Ryan & Colleen. We will be gone for about 10 days.
May--I just finished the school year last week, and have been easing into summer. We were back in Nebraska for BN's (beautiful niece) baptism where Ryan and I along with her other auntie were God-parents. It was a quick trip, but fun.
So that's what I've been up to, in a nutshell. Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09806986797423036657noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26448314.post-85978328464500991872013-01-10T20:54:00.000-07:002013-01-10T20:54:32.090-07:00Ten on Ten
So my plan is to hopefully make this a monthly thing...I've seen it all over Instagram, blogs, Facebook, etc. It's supposed to be simple, take 10 pictures, one every hour of your day and post them as you go along. Easy right? WRONG!
First, I can't be posting things on Facebook/Instagram every hour during school because I'm friends with parents/staff members on those media tools.
Second, I forgot...I set a reminder in my calendar so I would do it and remember this morning, then by noon I had forgot then I remembered and then I forgot.
So you get 10 pictures, not 10 sequential pictures, but not necessarily taken 10 hours in a row.
Ryan spent a lot of time in Estes growing up. In fact when we discussed it on Friday the conversation went like this:
S- Do you want to go to Estes Park tomorrow?
R-Can we eat at McDonalds?
S-WHAT?!
R-We always stopped at the McDonalds for lunch when we got there.
S-Oh, sure. So we're going?
R-Yeah.
So we left yesterday morning, headed out and got there in time for lunch
at McDonalds. We went into RMNP and then headed back to town. The
whole time we were in the park we were both on the look out for
animals. When we came out of the park and back into town we saw elk.
The guy on the right was a bit skiddish. We went across the street and parked at this cafe that was closed. I got out of the car and when he heard me he looked up. Then I purposely tried to make noise to get the guy on the left to look up...he was an man who wasn't interested in anything but the food he was eating.
But the old man had a HUGE rack! I wanted a picture of that in all its glory, but this is probably the best shot of about 25.
Then when we were leaving the parking lot, there right across the other street was this guy! We drove right up next to him. I probably could have touched him. I was afraid to get out of the car though because there wasn't much between him and us. So I only got this photo and the one below.
Today I'm enjoying my last day of break by inputting grades and getting the Gladiator ready for tomorrow. Boo! I might take down my Christmas decorations too.
Friday night the Emmaus teachers came over for a little get together shindig, so I didn't want to take my decorations down yet. I did get the guest room cleaned and the bed re-made sans sheets. I also put a nice quilt on the bed that is now in my craft room, so it looks like we have TWO guest rooms available friends!
I like when we get to be home together with not a lot to do. He had off beginning December 21st through January 1st. It was lovely! Most the the time we prepared for company, had company, and cleaned up from company, but we did get to a movie on Christmas Day.
We saw Silver Linings Playbook. It was pretty good. It was one of the movies that both guys and gals will like. It was a bit different seeing Bradly Cooper in a serious role, every time I see him I think of The Hangover. Jennifer Lawrence was also good in it. Though I kept thinking about her as Katniss every time she was on screen. You should see it. And if you live in the Denver area, go to the Landmark in Centennial...you get free pop and popcorn with every ticket purchase.
Last night I made Cheese Chicken Shells. It's a Weight Watchers Recipe. It was okay...I'm not sure if I would make it again anytime soon, but it might be a good thing every once in a while. Three of the stuffed shells were 11 points. Not too bad. Here's what mine looked like...
Well I'm off to work today to get things ready for the kiddies come back on Monday. I wish breaks could always be about 3 months long. :)
Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02082754221983753820noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26448314.post-7947448600266969902013-01-02T07:00:00.000-07:002013-01-02T07:00:09.556-07:00Goals for 2013Goals, resolutions, whatever you call them now is the time to make them, right? Well I have a few.
Be More Organized.
Specifically I'm terrible about keeping receipts and keeping track of mail that needs to be handled. We do most of our bills online but occasionally we get something in the make that needs to be filled out and returned or paid and I just pile it up with the 90000 other pieces of mail we get and then three months later I find it and it's too late. So my goal is to keep everything in envelopes by months. I made cute ones with my new Cricut. We'll see how it works out.
Be Healthier
Which is also the same as lose weight. Two months ago I joined Weight Watchers with a friend. I did great even losing a pound over Thanksgiving week. The last two weeks though I haven't been to a meeting, so who knows what the scale will say when I do go... But the be healthier part isn't just about losing weight, but WW has helped. For example, fruits and veggies are zero points, SO guess who's been eating more fruits and veggies? This girl!
"Run" Twelve 5ks
This may seem crazy, so let me explain. This year I turn 31. Katie from Runs with Cookies also turns 31 and pointed out that a 5k is 3.1 miles. So I thought, huh, maybe for my 31st year I should "run" a 5k. I really want to participate in a Disney race at some point in my life. I'm not ready to commit to the 13.1 half marathon, but I desperately desire to become a "runner". So this will help with the above goal, and it will be fun. I'm not going to be paying for all these 5k's. Some will be from the comfort of my treadmill. Here's my line up:
Get to School Earlier
I usually try to get to school early enough to get a few things done, but I started slacking. Ideally I would be at school no later than 6:30 AM every morning so that I can leave by 4 PM every afternoon. I'm going to work to get in earlier so that I can leave earlier. I found myself leaving later and later as we got closer to Christmas.
TRAVEL!
Hopefully we can add at least one state, maybe two to our list of states we have visited. I have a goal of visiting all 50 states before I turn 40, and to keep that goal we need to get traveling. :)
So there you have it. A few of my goals.
Oh, and I did my first 5k today to see what my time would be...47 minutes and 11 seconds. Hopefully by December it will be 37 minutes and 11 seconds. :)Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02082754221983753820noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26448314.post-65906559714439143912013-01-01T21:11:00.000-07:002013-01-01T21:11:02.882-07:00What happened the last 6 months?!?!I know, I know...I've been told multiple times by multiple people (mom...Colleen) that I need to update my blog. Part of my hesitation to update it was that I did not know what direction I wanted to take it.
You see when I started this little bloggy blog I was single. It was very much about me. It still kind of is. You see I chose the title "Only Grace" because I love that when Paul is begging for God to remove the thorn in his flesh that God says no, I'm going to use your weakness to show My power. I love that God does that with me too.
So I was toying with the idea of deleting this blog completely and starting a new one that was more encompassing of OUR life. But over the past few days I've decided that "Only Grace" is about Ryan & I.
You see when I first met Ryan he was not a Christian. I never pressured him to go to church with me but I did tell him the second day we were together that Jesus was important in my life and that if he wasn't interested in Jesus at all then our relationship would not go very far. I don't remember his response that day but he did continue to call and text me.
I remember one night we were talking and I told him I was going to church the next day and I invited him to go with me. He told me that he wasn't ready. I told him that was fine, but I did tell him I was going to keep inviting him. He did ask me how I knew that Christianity was the way to go. I told him that Christianity was the only religion I knew of that did not require "something" of me in order for me to go to heaven. I'm talking about pilgrimages and mission trips. I don't have to pray at certain times in certain ways. I told Ryan about GRACE that night. I told him that I firmly believed that it was only by grace that I could get into heaven, because I am a sinful person.
I guess after that conversation he "got it" because the next week he went to church with me, and has gone ever sense. He was even baptized and confirmed. So you see, "Only Grace" does work for us.
So I'm going to keep it, and I'm going to try to blog more regularly with it. AND it will probably be more about me because, well, I'm the one writing it. But it will serve as our family blog.
So now that you know one of my excuses for not blogging...what's happened since July?
Well in August I started teaching at a new school in North Denver. It's a suburban school. It's a lot different that my old school. But it's good. I've met new people. I have an awesome class. I have a loooooooooong commute. I have a supportive pastor that I work with and I love it.
In November Ryan and I went to Nebraska for Thanksgiving. All 18 of us were able to get together at Grama and Grampa's house which is great and always a lot of fun.
The weekend after Thanksgiving Ryan and I met my parents in NYC for my cousin's wedding. It was dad's first time being in NYC. We had a good time. It was so fun to see my parents together doing fun stuff and enjoying life.
Last weekend after Christmas my bro and his wife and my parents came out to celebrate Christmas. Our house was full and it was wonderful. Oh, and my brother and his wife are going to have a baby in March. Yup, I'm going to be an aunt!
So today is January 1st and I'm back at the blogging...woot!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02082754221983753820noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26448314.post-25635644824104630182012-07-22T21:00:00.001-06:002012-07-22T21:00:16.037-06:00Well, it's been a while...
So here's your photo dump...
Have you seen those "stickers"that you put on your nails? This is the second time I've used them. These are ombre from silver to sky blue, and they sparkle. :) I hear them! I only did it because I found them in Target in the clearance basket for $3! The first time I did it I get them for FREE.
This time I put a clear top coat over them. I think this is wise, the first time every little bump seemed to nick my nails for the entire time they were on, this time, not so much.
It's perfectly acceptable to travel with an unopened bottle of wine in your cup holder...right?
I have an app that puts a bible verse on my phone's home screen every day. This was the verse recently...one of my favorites!
I LOVE Nerds. The only thing better than Nerds is a Nerds Rope. I found a basket of them in the dollar section at Target. I walked away...I don't need Nerds...
I didn't walk away from these shoes for Ryan at Target though. They were on the clearance rack for $10. I brought them home hoping Ryan would like them. I figured he'd roll his eyes at me and tell me to return them. He actually likes them! They are a great in between flip-flops and real shoes. Ryan wears flip flops, but always takes them off to drive, these he doesn't have to take off. And they are just as easy as flip-flops.
Last photo for this installment...me in my new car! Okay, it's our new car, but I get to drive it most days. :) I'm pretty blessed.
